Minimum pay for shifts on Labour Day 2015

  • Labour Day - 9 March 2015 - Victorian public holiday

Labour Day public holiday in Victoria is on Monday, 9 March 2015. On the same day, ACT has Canberra Day, South Australia has the Adelaide Cup and Tasmania has the Eight Hours Day (their equivalent of Labour Day). Each fall on the second Monday in March.

Hospitality employers using labour on the ninth need to remember minimum pay for their employees. Keep that in mind when writing rosters and costing labour.

The Hospitality Industry (General) Award 2010 and the Restaurant Industry Award 2010 each provide that, on a public holiday:

  • Casual employees working are entitled to be paid for a minimum of two hours’ work (as usual);
  • Part time employees working are entitled to be paid for a minimum of four hours’ work; and
  • Full time employees working are entitled to be paid for a minimum of four hours’ work.

That’s whether they work for that length of time or not.
